The chief’s wife bashfully held her hand behind her back. Two bright-eyed preschool girls clung shyly to her skirt and stared at the strange white woman. Susan*, the HCM triage nurse, greeted the girls and their mother with a smile before focusing on the patient card for the mother. “Tatiana* – cut on right hand,” she read. “Can you show me your hand?”
Reluctantly, Tatiana presented her hand to Susan. The blood stained skin surrounded a gaping wound.
“What happened?” Susan asked.
Tatiana’s eyes dropped to floor as she turned her head and whispered, “My husband hit me with a piece of wood.”
Tears began to roll down Susan’s cheeks and drip from her chin.
“I was a battered wife too,” she revealed.
As she gently cleaned the wound, she shared her own story – her feelings of pain, betrayal and guilt. Swabbing the broken palm, she recalled her own hopelessness and desperate search for true love.
Smiling through her tears, she described the healing she found for her broken heart in the arms of Christ.
“You need to realize God sees your pain, and He sent this team all the way from America just to… …serve your village. God loves you so much that He arranged, out of all the nurses here today, for you to be my patient. ”
Tears dropped from the chins of both women as Tatiana asked Jesus to save her and bring that same healing to her own heart. She returned to Lonlipi, her village, eager to share with her husband the great thing God had done.
