In June, HealthCare Ministries sent a team of nine to hold medical evangelism clinics in different villages along the Paraguay River in Brazil. This outreach was unique in that our team traveled by boat and stopped in a different village every day for a week to minister to the needs in the area. Our team partnered with Assemblies of God missionary Terry Johnson and the national pastor of an Assemblies of God church in Corumbá. The team saw a total of 419 patients.
The needs represented on this outreach were diverse because the location changed every day. Each village presented a unique experience for our team members to minister not only to physical needs, but spiritual as well. Being a small group, each team member had many opportunities to share the Gospel with the different people who came to the clinic. This was an aspect that Jessica Hardin, an HCM missionary associate and RN evaluator, enjoyed.
“It was a rewarding evangelism experience,” Jessica said. She loved seeing the people’s countenance change as they learned more about God.
One young woman in particular with whom Jessica and Assemblies of God missionary, Esdras Orantes, talked knew that she was not ready for eternity, despite her regular church attendance. She had a lively personality, but when they started talking about whether or not she knew if she would go to heaven, her countenance changed and she became somber, realizing that she was not sure. She wanted to be sure and prayed to receive Jesus as her personal Savior.
This young woman was just one of the 67 people who prayed for salvation on this outreach. While our team was at one village called Port of Hope, our missionary hosts baptized a group of people who had been waiting for them to visit. Our team got to witness it as they baptized them in the river.
